Dear TACCTEP Members and Future Members,
I am very grateful to serve as president this next academic year. TACCTEP has been a labor of love, and as we continue to establish and gain momentum throughout this year, community college teacher education programs (CCTEPs) will continue to have a significant voice at the local, state, and national levels.
I would like to recognize and congratulate our new Board Members! We have new positions that were filled to help reach more community colleges and have representation for our organization. Members-At-Large in the West, South, and East parts of Texas. Welcome, Ms. Regina (Jeanie) McGough, Dr. Rene Zuniga, and Dr. Marian Ellis to our board as new positions. Also welcome, Ms. Shamim Arastu, who is our new Treasurer and our new President Elect Ms. Denise McKown from Midland, Texas! Dr. Doug Hamman, Chair of the Teacher Education Department at Texas Tech University will continue to serve as our Member-At-Large, University Representative.
We cannot forget those who served on our first board, Dr. Giao Phan, Dr. Annette Davis-Smith and Dr. Doug Hamman! Your contributions to our board, your representation at conferences and meetings have been incredibly beneficial. You have set a firm foundation for our organization these past two years. We are forever grateful! Of course, our first President and now Past President, Lisa Hill. Thank you for your efforts in establishing a seat at the table on the CSOTTE board.
Since TACCTEP began, we have established a place on the CSOTTE Board, which is the umbrella state organization that houses many associations across Texas in all aspects of Teacher Education. In the past, CSOTTE was made up of only university and alternative program teacher educators and administrators. Since 2018, CSOTTE opened their doors to community college teacher educators . With the help of the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP), TACCTEP became a member organization with CSOTTE. Lisa and I were the first community college representatives on their board. Today, I am part of the executive board of CSOTTE as their secretary--the first community college teacher educator in this capacity. As an organization, we are truly proud of these accomplishments; we are excited to pave the way for future participation of other community college educators under CSOTTE. For more of our actions and activities these past two years see our timeline.
Additionally, we have representation on the Educator Preparation Advisory Committee (EPAC) with TEA. I have been given a great privilege to sit with region service centers, alternative programs and university faculty and administration to discuss teacher education and licensure for our state. The hot topic is the proposed replacement of the PPR with edTPA. Please read the email sent from Stanford University staff on edTPA and more news on teacher education updates for additional information. How are CCTEPs responding to these changes? Are CCs a part of edTPA pilots across the state? How can we as CCTEPs align our curriculum to prepare our students for teacher performance assessments adequately and effectively? These are burning questions that TACCTEP will investigate and provide information later this year.
The 86th Legislative Session passed important decisions concerning teacher education, which have implications for CCTEPs. Please see the Newsletter from the TxATE Conference for more information. Our member affiliations with Texas Association of Teacher Educators (TxATE), the Texas chapter of ATE, gives us an opportunity to be involved in policy, recruitment efforts and data reporting at the state level. TxATE has been instrumental in working as advocates for teacher educators and our students.
Vice President Denise McKown and I will be presenting at the CSOTTE conference this October, 2019 to share how our teacher education departments have established and modified our curriculum in order to meet these expectations. We hope that some of you will be presenting and/or attending the CSOTTE Conference this year. We invite you to our membership meeting at this conference. Dr. Allen Michie, from the THECB, will discuss the revision progress on the AAT degree, dual credit for teacher education courses and other information concerning CCTEPs.
Our board has planned this academic year the following goals:
1. Visibility: Strengthen partnerships, attend/present at conferences (CSOTTE, NACCTEP/AACTE, TxATE, TCCTA, etc.), join efforts that will advance teacher education at the community college level, establish and maintain our website, and keep an active social media presence.
2. Non-profit status: Begin the process to obtain non-profit status in order to open doors for sponsors, who can support our mission.
3. Revenue Model: Create a revenue model that will sustain our operations and provide possible scholarships for students and/or support CCTEPs across our state.
Community college teacher educators hold a significant place in the continuum of teacher education (from 2 year to 4 year institutions). With the impending and current changes in teacher education at the state level, it is vital that TACCTEP provide up-to-date information to CCTEPs so that we are all effectively preparing our students for success at their EPPs, strengthening our partnerships/agreements with universities and garnering opportunities to advance teacher education at the community college level.
I encourage you to be involved, be informed and be engaged with TACCTEP. I look forward to this year and the great opportunities that await community college teacher education programs across our state!
Sincerely,
Fay
